January 18 : Internet on strike

It seems 18th January 2012 will always be remembered as a first strike day in the annals of  Internet. We think it should remembered as the first strike of INTERNET since its inception because there is a very serious attempt to cripple internet by introducing SOPA and PIPA bill on 24th January.

The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who makes the request, the court order could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison for ten such infringements within six months. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement. This bill is sponsored by Hollywood media moguls and recently the comment made by Mr Rupert Murdoch on Google as a leader of piracy clearly shows the support of conventional media to this bill . The proponent of this bill are saying that it will protect the intellectual rights but the way internet arena has reacted, it seems that may be it will protect copyrights of these companies but it is sure that it will clearly hit the freedom of speech and the operation of internet badly.

Internet has transformed aggressively in a decade and it has increased one aspect dramatically that is sharing of content. Today internet is like a virtual world where billion of people are sharing, producing and consuming content. This whole concept gave birth many websites like Youtube, Piccasa, Flickr and a genre of websites like Rapidshare, The Pirate Bay which provides only downloading, uploading of data to the consumer.

The tenants of SOPA clearly disturbs the functioning of Internet and somehow it is directly attacking the freedom of speech on internet. All the stalwarts of silicon valley are opposing this bill in their own way. No one would have ever thought of such blackout or opposition from websites like Wikipedia, Google, Reddit and Craigslist. WordPress came as one of the biggest supporter of this opposition and they have also blackened their landing page of the website with messages to oppose these bills. WordPress is also providing eleven different plugins to the bloggers through which they can oppose these bills. While writing this post more than 25k plugins has already been downloaded. zenhabbits.net a world famous spiritual blog is opposing in their own unique way.

Videathink consider it as first strike of Internet since its inception and it ill grow to its max till 24th jan.
