In the wake of recent sale of Instagram in $1 billion, every mobile social network application has become a hot property. Path was launched in November 2010, has more than two million users.
Path is designed to keep social networking and sharing a private and personal affair. Its aim is not to connect you with world but Path is a strictly personal social network and focus to connect you only with user in your personal network. The post on virgin website which announced involvement of Richard Branson as an investor has also referred in a subtle way that companies are interested in buying Path. In case of Instagram also, the investor were able to double the money in less than two weeks. Richard Brnason invested in latest round of funding which also includes Greylock Partners, Jerry Murdock, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Index Ventures, Mark Pincus, Yuri Milner and Allen & Company as other prominent investors.
Path describe themselves as the smart journal that helps you to share your life with the loved ones. David Corin who helped to set Facebook in his earlier days is one of the co-founder of Path. He must have seen a niche market of social networking with a limited approach of connections. It can be considered as close personal social network. In Path user can connect with only 150 people which is very limited.
Path is inspired by Oxford professor Robin Dunbar, whose research delves deeply into the number of trusted relationships humans can maintain throughout their life. As per his research Humans tend to have 5 best friends, 15 good friends, 50 close friends and family, and 150 total friends. Path is an extremely closed mobile social network application which allows it’s users to share their life with their personal friends only.
Path is a niche product in social media market and target user are those people who wants to be on a private social networking.
Path is headquartered in San Francisco and It was relaunch again last year. A user can share Pictures, Videos, their location and music they are listening to their friends on Path or choose to share to people on Facebook.
Instagram has fueled the financial potential of many mobile based applications and if Path is sold in another few weeks or month then it will be a fast profit for investors.
