CERN announced: new particle observed consistent with Higgs Boson Particle

Today CERN has announced that they have observed the particle which is consistent with Higgs Boson particle. The announcement must have send ripples in the scientific community in the world. The announcement has also made headlines in the world media.

“The Higgs boson is an elementary particle in the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. It belongs to a class of particles known as bosons, characterized by an integer value of their spin quantum number. The Higgs field is a quantum field that fills all of space. Fundamental particles (orelementary particles) such as quarks and electrons acquire mass through the Higgs mechanism. The Higgs boson is the quantum of the Higgs field, just as the photon is the quantum of the electromagnetic field. The Higgs boson has a large mass, however, which is why a large accelerator is needed to observe it”

Peter Higgs himself was also present during the announcement which is made by the dedicated team of the CERN scientist. Since last 50 years God particle was an illusive missing part from the standard model of the Universe. Peter Higgs was surprised to find that it has happened in his life time. Particle Physicist where hunting for this particle since last fifty years and Higgs Boson alluded them and existed as a theortical particle. The result is announced by CERN at  international conference of Higher Energy Physics which is being held at Melbourne and Geneva. CERN scientist were very cautious in declaring the result. In a reply to to a questions in press conference the director of CERN Rolf Heuer said ” In layman terns We have it and in scientific terms we have to find what we have”.

In a press release related to the announcement CERN has said that

“We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage,” said ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti, “but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.”

“The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found,” said CMS experiment spokesperson Joe Incandela. “The implications are very significant and it is precisely for this reason that we must be extremely diligent in all of our studies and cross-checks.”


Director of Research at CERN Sergio Berulucci said that [highlighter color="gray" ]“It’s hard to no get excited by these result”[/highlighter] . He added[highlighter color="gray" ] “ We stated last year that in 2012 we would either find a new Higgs-like particle or exclude the existence of the Standard Model Higgs. With all the necessary caution, it looks to me that we are at a branching point: the observation of this new particle indicates the path for the future towards a more detailed understanding of what we’re seeing in the data.”[/highlighter]

While finishing the announcement Rolf Heuer empahasized on three points.

-Global Effort- Global Success

-Results today has been possible due to extraordinary performance of accelerators, experiments and grid computing.  

- Observation of a new particle is consistent with a Higgs Boson. ( but which one……?)

LHC (Large Hadron Collidor) will stop running after three or four moths as it needed maintenance. Scientific community is energized with this discovery. Large Hadron Collidor is a 27 KM (17 M) long built inside a tunnel at the border of French and Switzerland to carry out the experiment.

The discovery of Higgs Boson particle is considered to be a global effort  and a global success. We also hope that in coming years more efforts and environment should be created so that science and technology should be followed with global efforts.
